15 Good Cleaning Habits to Develop

It’s hard to keep your house cleaned all the time when you lead a busy lifestyle. There are so many things going around you that it’s hard to take on extra work. Therefore, good cleaning habits are really important.

Wouldn’t it be nice if your house was kept clean all the time so you don’t have to put in any extra time? You should be aware of these cleaning habits to help you navigate your busy lifestyle by keeping part of it in order.

1. Clean Throughout the Day

Clean Throughout the Day

It’s best to clean up messes throughout the day. If you don’t, things can pile up and your place will start having an odor. For example, wash your dishes as soon as you’re finished with a meal so they won’t start piling up and smelling up your house.

The same goes for other messes, such as messes your children have made. If those messes don’t get cleaned up right away, someone could end up tripping or slipping over toys or spills and someone could get seriously injured.

2. Making your Bed

Making your Bed every day

When you wake up every morning, it’s good to get in the habit of making your bed. You may not know what the point is since you’re going to be climbing into bed every night.

The reason why you should be making your bed every morning is that it will prepare you for unexpected guests. You never know who may show up at your door and you should have your place looking as clean as possible.

3. Wiping up Spills

Wiping up Spills

This goes for every room in the house. If you don’t wipe spills off the counters or tables, you could end up leaving cleaning spray on the spill so it can soak through. Once it soaks through, it will be easier for you to wipe up.

Instead of having to go through that process, clean up everything immediately and don’t save it for later. If some juice spills on the carpet, it will soak through and will cause stains that you can’t get off.

4. Put Clothes Away

Put Clothes Away

Putting your clothes away is a chore to get in the habit of doing because no one likes doing laundry. If you don’t put your clothes away as soon as they get out of the dryer, then wrinkles will occur if they are left in your laundry basket.

If you have clothes hanging up on a clothesline or in the laundry room, you should put those away as soon as they are dry. If you don’t, it makes your place look cluttered and not organized.

5. Commit to a Routine

Instead of spending hours cleaning up your house in one day, try getting as much done as you can for about 15 to 30 minutes a day.

No matter how busy you are, you can spare 15-30 minutes a day. You could also clean for 30 minutes, get some work done, and then go back to cleaning. This way the whole day isn’t wasted.

6. Put Your Dirty Clothes Away

As mentioned earlier it’s best to put your clothes away as soon as they get out of the dryer, but what about dirty clothes? It takes 2 seconds to put your clothes in the hamper after you take them off for the day.

If you throw clothes on the floor, it will start stinking up the room and eventually, the smell will drift to the whole house. You will have to spend extra time getting rid of the smell. It’s best to put your dirty clothes in the hamper immediately to prevent that horrid smell.

7. Clean Toilets

You also need to get in the habit of cleaning your toilet after each use. You may share bathrooms in your household. No one wants to see the remains of a bowel movement that didn’t get flushed all the way. You don’t need to do a deep clean of your toilet every day.

However, you should give it a little swipe with the toilet brush after each bowel movement. Taking care of this right away will prevent anything from sticking to the toilet where you have to scrub to get it off.

8. Getting Organized

Getting Organized

It can be exciting to make a change by getting in the habit to organize your household and make it more liveable. Once you purchase the items you need to organize your place, you will need to get in the habit to stay with a new organizational routine.

When you stay organized, everything will have a place and you will have to put your things in their special place before you move on to the next item on your agenda for that day.

9. Cleaning After an Illness

You should keep up with your place after someone in your household undergoes an illness, such as a cold, strep, or anything similar to that nature.

Since germs are everywhere, it’s best to carry disinfectant spray with you and clean doorknobs and anything you touch to prevent the spread of the illness. Spraying some disinfectant spray is easy to do and will take only seconds of your time.

10. Clean Food out of the Sink

Once you have washed the dishes, be sure to wipe the sink clean. It’s best to make sure all the food has gone down the garbage disposal before hanging up the towel.

If remnants of food are left in the sink, you will attract bugs that like to feed off the little things.

11. Sweep the Floors

why do you need to sweep floors

Vacuuming can sometimes become a hassle because you have to get out the cord and plug it in, which is why many people have switched to sweeping. It’s best to get in the habit to sweep your floors at least 3 times a day (once after each meal).

If you get in the habit of sweeping at the end of each meal, you will lose the risk of ants entering your home to eat those small crumbs you have on the floor. Also, it feels uncomfortable for you to step on crumbs every time you walk through the room.

12. Clean Sections of your House

When you’re living a busy life, you may get frustrated because you don’t have the time to clean your place in one day.

To save some time and make room for your busy schedule, get in the habit of cleaning sections of your house every day until your place is cleaned.

For example, you may want to clean the family room and laundry room on the same day. The next day you may do the kitchen and the bathrooms, and so on.

13. Clean out Refridgerator and Freezer

Get a routine going to clean out your refrigerator and freezer. There could be leftovers in there that you have had a month ago, and it could stink up your fridge and freezer. Be sure to set up a routine to clean them out at least once a week.

14. Make it a Game

Cleaning can be fun and you could get in the habit of making it a game. With children, be sure to make it seem like it’s the best game ever.

Have a race to see who can clean up the most in 15 minutes. Making cleaning a game is something your kids will get excited over. Plus the room will be spotless.

15. Throw out Recyclables

It’s best to save our planet and recycle. Plastic bottles, milk jugs, orange juice cartons, and more can cause a major disadvantage to your living situation if it’s all cluttered. As soon as you’re finished, toss it in the recyclable bin.
